Primary Care Competencies

Clinical Acumen

For each common problem:

  1. Perform a focused history and physical exam.
  2. Order the appropriate laboratory testing.
  3. Generate an appropriate differential diagnosis based on information obtained as well as disease prevalence of the community.
  4. Develop a therapeutic plan based on the differential diagnosis and patient's need, guided by principles of evidence based medicine.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of treatment options.
  • Appropriate drug usage - understand cost of medication, side effects and potential drug interaction.
  • Non pharmaceutic treatment options.
  1. Be aware of possible community resource(s) for the patient's health care. (eg. Home Health Care, Public Health Dept.)
  2. Given a patient of specific age and sex, generate a health maintenance plan, including disease and injury prevention.
  • Identify health risk in patients.
  • Identify appropriate indications and schedules for immunization in all age groups.
  • Develop skills to counsel patients with harmful habits, including tobacco and substance abuse.
  1. Have an understanding of the impact of the illness on the patient and family as well as how normal and abnormal family relationships affect health and illness.
  2. Have an appreciation of the effects of cultural and/or ethnic differences in attitudes toward health and disease, and as potential communication barriers in the patient-physician relationship.
