Primary Care Competencies
Clinical Acumen
For each common problem:
- Perform a focused history and physical exam.
- Order the appropriate laboratory testing.
- Generate an appropriate differential diagnosis
based on information obtained as well as disease
prevalence of the community.
- Develop a therapeutic plan based on the
differential diagnosis and patient's need, guided by
principles of evidence based medicine.
- Demonstrate an understanding of treatment options.
- Appropriate drug usage - understand cost of medication, side effects and
potential drug interaction.
- Non pharmaceutic treatment options.
- Be aware of possible community resource(s) for the patient's
health care. (eg. Home Health Care, Public Health Dept.)
- Given a patient of specific age and sex, generate a health maintenance
plan, including disease and injury prevention.
- Identify health risk in patients.
- Identify appropriate indications and schedules for immunization in all age
groups.
- Develop skills to counsel patients with harmful habits, including tobacco
and substance abuse.
- Have an understanding of the impact of the illness on the patient and
family as well as how normal and abnormal family relationships affect health
and illness.
- Have an appreciation of the effects of cultural and/or ethnic differences
in attitudes toward health and disease, and as potential communication
barriers in the patient-physician relationship.
