Does the patient wear contact lenses? And do they wear them overnight?
For those who do, they are at special risk for a bacterial superinfection of an abrasion.
The pt should discontinue their use until complete resolution of the situation.

Finally, there are patterns of corneal defect which can aid in your diagnosis.
