Question 7: Where is the most common area for a carotid plaque?

Answer:
In 90% of patients, the carotid bifurcation is the site of a symptomatic atherosclerotic lesion. In the remaining 10% of symptomatic patients, investigation will reveal the responsible lesion in the brachiocephalic (aortic arch branches) or proximal vertebral arteries (Stoney, 1995).
