Table #8: Laboratory Findings Predictive of a Complicated Course

• PaO² < 60 mm Hg or PaCO² of > 50 mm Hg on room air
• White blood cell count < 4 x 10 ⁹/L or > 30 x 10 ⁶/L
• Abnormal renal function with BUN > 20 mg/dL
• Need for mechanical ventilation
• Rapidly progressive chest radiographic abnormalities
• Sepsis or sepsis syndrome
