Clerkship
Student Assignments
Part 1: Required forms
All students must complete the following 3 forms and turn them in at the HMC
evaluation session. The log forms help us monitor the quality of the clerkship
experience. To ensure the accuracy of the data and to avoid getting overwhelmed,
we recommend you do the data entry on a daily basis.
Part 2: Students Must Choose Option A OR Option B to Fulfill Part 2 of
the Assignment.
Option A: Written Assignment
Forms must be turned in at PSHMC evaluation session
- complete the 4 forms for the
medication/therapeutic exercise
following instructions on page 17.
- complete a Patient Data Base
(pages 23-25) on a patient for which you
have provided care following instructions on page 22. This requirement
should be completed by the end of the third week and be critiqued by a
faculty physician. Patient health risks should be identified and strategies
should be developed to promote patient health.
- a medical genogram is also to
be completed on this patient used for the Patient Write-up if possible. If not, complete a genogram on
yourself or a friend. See instructions pages 26-30.
- Evidence Based Medicine: Critical Appraisal - When treating patients, we
may not have the most up to date answers to questions that are pertinent to
the evaluation or management of a patient problem. These questions (pages
31-32) are best answered by a search of the current literature. If you need
help, you can access www.hmc.psu.edu/cpc - then "Evidence
Based Medicine."
- Responses must be emailed to wwillenbecher@psu.edu
Option B: Computer cases
- Complete three (3)
interactive computerized cases (Family Medicine On-line) of
common problems. The cases must be turned in on the last day of the
rotation. The cases are at the following web site:
http://www.hmc.psu.edu/ume/fcmonline/index.htm. They are common
presentations of common medical problems in a self-guided tutorial.
After you enter your response, faculty comments will be available to you for
instant feedback. To optimize your learning, we encourage you to think
about the questions before typing your answers. However, extensive
research or lengthy answers are NOT required. Your answers are not
graded. You may do these cases at home, at the clerkship site if
feasible, the public library, or at the computer learning center at the
library of the College of Medicine.
Responses to the questions can be typed and emailed to Wendy Willenbecher
submitted on the last day of the rotation. You might consider keeping your
answers in a word file if you do not plan to complete a case in one sitting.
Wendy Jo's email is wwillenbecher@psu.edu.
Extra credit will be given if both Option A and Option B are completed and if
additional computer cases were completed. However, grades are given based on the
quality of work and not simply the quantity of work. Therefore, completing both
assignments will help but not guarantee a high grade.
