Residency Program
Overview
Both the Departments of Surgery and Anesthesia offer ACGME-accredited training
programs in Critical Care of the Surgical Patient. The fellowship is
designed to provide advanced clinical training in critical care for board
eligible general surgeons and anesthesiologists. Completion of the program
will qualify the trainee to take the examination for "Added Qualifications
in Critical Care" given by the American Boards of Surgery and Anesthesia.
Surgical residents who have completed a general surgical residency or who have
completed a minimum of 3 years of training and have a categorical position
available to them on completion of the program are eligible. Anesthesia
residents who have completed their three years of training in Anesthesia are
eligible to apply.
The training programs are based in the Surgical Intensive Care Unit (SICU) at
Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center. The University Hospital is a
500 bed tertiary care Medical Center serving central Pennsylvania and northern
Maryland. The Hershey Medical Center is the only Level I Trauma Center in
south Central Pennsylvania with approximately 1200 admissions annually.
The SICU is a 30-bed state-of-the-art complex providing critical care services
for over 1800 patients annually. The patient population in the SICU
includes a diverse mix of cardiothoracic, general, vascular, transplant, trauma,
and neurosurgical cases.
