PA Shaken Baby Syndrome

        OUR PROGRAM

 In 2002, Pennsylvania passed ACT 2002-176 The Shaken Baby Syndrome Education Act.  The Pennsylvania Department of Health and The Pennsylvania Shaken Baby Syndrome  Prevention and Awareness Program at The Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center work hand in hand to assist hospitals with compliance to this mandate by sharing the following common goals:

  • To educate every parent upon the birth of every child about Shaken Baby Syndrome prevention;
  • To confirm receipt of the education through the use of commitment statements that parents are asked to voluntarily sign; and
  • To demonstrate a reduction in the incidence of Shaken Baby Syndrome throughout Pennsylvania

The Pennsylvania Shaken Baby Syndrome Prevention and Awareness Program was initiated at The Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center under the direction of Pediatric Neurosurgeon, Mark Dias, M.D.  We have been providing shaken baby syndrome educational materials including brochures, "Portrait of Promise” videos, posters, and commitment statements free of charge as well as training obstetric, nursery, NICU, and PICU nurses at birthing and children's hospitals throughout Pennsylvania since May 2002. This program replicates the Upstate New York Shaken Baby Syndrome Prevention Program, which has shown a reduction in the incidence of SBS by 50%!  In Pennsylvania, over 60 babies each year are the victims of shaking episodes. We can change that!  If all Pennsylvania hospitals partner together we can save the lives of MANY babies statewide!

The Pennsylvania Department of Health supports the work of the The Pennsylvania Shaken Baby Syndrome Prevention and Awareness Program and encourages all Pennsylvania hospitals to work together in this statewide prevention effort!  They strongly support the sharing of information with Dr. Dias and his Nurse Coordinators about the number of families participating in each hospital's program.

We offer continuing education credits and free on-site training to assist hospitals in making their program a success!  Please contact the Pennsylvania Nurse Coordinators Carroll Rottmund, RN, Kelly Cappos, RN, or Marie Killian, RN to schedule an in-service for your staff or if you have any questions.  Contact via website www.pasbs.com, or phone: (717) 531-7498.

Thank you!  We look forward to hearing from you!
