Injury Prevention Programs

 

Community Outreach Programs

The trauma center injury prevention program staff participates in frequent events in the communities to educate children, teens and their parents about safety and injury prevention. These events go far beyond the lecture and pamphlet approach.

SAFE KIDS Buckle Up

The mission of the Dauphin County SAFE KIDS Coalition is to promote the prevention of childhood injuries through education, networking and advocacy.

Goals

  • To work with community partners to reduce the risk of injury to children of Dauphin county.
  • To educate parents and caregivers to provide a safer environment for children.
  • To increase community awareness that injuries can be prevented.
  • To work for the changes in the law, policies and products which will decrease causes of injuries.

Did You Know . . .

  • Injuries are the number one killer of our children - more die from injuries than from all childhood diseases combined.
  • Injuries are the leading cause of childhood disabilities.
  • Almost all injuries are preventable if families take simple steps to protect their children.
  • Children are most at risk in traffic and in their homes.
  • For every child death due to injury, there are 42 children hospitalized and 1,120 emergency room visits.

What YOU can do . . .

  • Teach children and their caregivers the basics of safety.
  • Seek ways to create a safe environment for children.
  • Practice injury prevention.
  • Incorporate injury prevention policies and strategies within your agency.
  • Advocate for laws and regulations which promote safer behaviors and products.
  • Join forces with others as a member of Dauphin County SAFE KIDS.

The Solution:   What We Do . . .

The Dauphin County SAFE KIDS Coalition:

  • Links with local school districts to promote awareness of safety issues, resources and programs.
  • Conducts SAFE KIDS Week activities.
  • Distributes educational materials and safety devices such as car seats and bike helmets.
  • Provides training to raise awareness of injuries and targeted strategies for prevention.
  • Promotes safety for children with special needs.
  • Shares information on available injury prevention resources and programs.
  • Participates in injury prevention activities, health fairs and community events.
  • Conducts monthly, open meetings.

Helmet Distribution

The goal of the Helmet Distribution program, begun in 1995 is to prevent head injuries in children. Helmets are given free of charge to all trauma patients who are involved in activities that require a helmet.

TIPP Program

Injured children and their families are given Information from the Academy of Pediatrics. These age specific prevention materials are in addition to safety devices that the family may need to better keep their children safe. The program is supported by grant funding from the Children's' Miracle Network and the Dauphin County SAFE KIDS Coalition.
