Dermatopathology Elective

Objective

To learn the basic techniques of processing dermatopathology specimens and the fundamentals of diagnostic dermatopathology. The student of dermatopathology will become proficient in diagnosing inflammatory and neoplastic cutaneous disease.

Course Description

The dermatopathology elective is available to pathology and dermatology residents who wish to spend one to two months in dermatopathology. Skin biopsies from inside cases are first reviewed by the rotator and then signed out with the attending dermatopathologist. Residents will also be expected to attend and participate in the weekly dermatopathology conference. Pathology residents also have the option of attending Dermatology clinics and conferences. An extensive collection of interesting cases will also be used as a supplemental educational aid.

During the elective time in dermatopathology the resident will be given the opportunity to engage in a research project. Research will be aimed primarily at clinical pathological investigation with emphasis on preparing a brief manuscript for publication. Research should be initiated early in the rotation under the direction of the attending dermatopathologist.
