Division of Experimental Pathology
The
Gittlen Cancer Research Foundation consists of a 4 member faculty, with Ph.D. or M.D./Ph.D.
degrees, and occupies about 10,000 sq. ft. of laboratory space. All faculty are
engaged in basic and/or applied research directly related to cancer. The
Foundation
came into being based on fund-raising efforts of Warren Gittlen, who established a fund to
support cancer research following the death of his father over 35 years ago: annual
donations now amount to $775,000, all of which directly supports basic research. The
faculty currently raises an additional $3 million annually in research support from
extramural sources.
Community activities established to raise funds for the Institute include an annual
golf tournament and Music for Jake, a festive evening of chamber music and art.
Experimental pathology faculty collaborate in research with their colleagues in
anatomic and clinical pathology and in the other basic science disciplines and are
encouraged to participate in housestaff training. Along with their clinical colleagues
from the Department of Pathology, they serve on interdisciplinary course committees for
the medical school curriculum and work to maintain a high quality of pathology education
for the students in the Penn State College of Medicine.
