Dr. Zander became Chair of our department in June, 2006.  Prior to this, she served as tenured Professor, Vice Chair, and Director of Anatomic Pathology at University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston Medical School where she was named the endowed Harvey S. Rosenberg Chair in Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, and was a member of the faculty at the University of Florida College of Medicine where she held the position of Chief of Anatomic Pathology at the Malcom Randall Veterans Affairs Medical Center. She is an elected member of the Council of the American Society of Investigative Pathology, for which she also chairs the Committee for Career Development, Women & Minorities. She is also active in the United States and Canadian Academy of Pathology, the Pulmonary Pathology Society, and the Association of Clinical Scientists.  She serves on the editorial boards of CHEST and Annals of Clinical and Laboratory Science, and has been invited to serve on multiple peer review panels for Department of Defense research programs.

Dr. Zander is also a practicing pathologist with subspecialty expertise in pulmonary pathology.  For many years, she has maintained a consult service in this area, accepting difficult pulmonary pathology cases referred to her for second opinions.  Her research is focused primarily on pulmonary pathology, particularly in the areas of stem cell biology, transplantation, and cancer.  She enjoys working with residents on clinical services and research projects, and many of these research projects have led to presentations at national and international meetings, particularly the USCAP and ASCP.  In 2006, two of these projects also received awards at the state medical society poster and podium presentation competitions.  Residents are welcomed and encouraged to talk with her about becoming involved in research projects, whether in lung pathology or another area of interest.
