The Division of Anatomic Pathology examines about 600 placentas yearly
received from high-risk births within the institution. Dr. Richard Naeye also receives
large numbers of placentas for review from institutions and physicians throughout the
nation. Instruction is routinely provided on a one-on-one basis daily for residents and
medical students. Emphasis is placed on correlating anatomic with clinical, laboratory and
sometimes brain image findings for individual infants and children. Dr. Naeye is an
internationally recognized expert and lecturer on placental diseases and on SIDS. His
research focuses on a wide range of disorders that affect the fetus and neonate. There is
a heavy emphasis on the disorders that initiate stillbirth, neonatal death, neonatal
morbidity and brain damage of many types. Dr. Naeye also serves as a consultant on
pneumoconioses and fetal lung diseases.
