Invitation to Researchers
The Penn State Hershey Neuroscience Research Institute (PSHNRI) was founded
in 2004 to promote neuroscience research, research training and the provision of
evidence-based care in the treatment of individuals with brain disorders. The
PSHNRI advances medical neuroscience efforts located at the Penn State Milton S.
Hershey Medical Center/College of Medicine campus and, together with
neuroscience initiatives at Penn State University Park, make up the system-wide
Penn State Neuroscience Institute.
On February 8, 2005, Dr. Bernhard Luscher was selected as the Co-Director of
the Penn State Neuroscience Research Institute. Dr. Luscher's appointment
completes the initial phase of establishing a unified Penn State Neuroscience
Institute and represents a critical phase in promoting neuroscience education,
research, patient care and outreach efforts that span the Hershey Medical and
University Park campuses. Faculty at both campuses and their research groups are
affiliated with diverse Departments and Colleges, thereby bringing together
different disciplines of the life sciences and beyond. The organizational
structure is designed to foster inter- and multi-disciplinary research, and
cross-campus collaborations between Hershey Medical Center and University Park.
In terms of recent education efforts, the PSHNRI Steering Committee introduced
the Neuroscience Seminar
Series and will host the First Annual Penn State Neuroscience Research
Conference this June. The theme of this first meeting is Anxiety,
Mood & Sleep Disorders: Role of Stress & Trauma. A theme (Deep
Brain Stimulation: Research and Clinical Applications) also has been identified
for the 2006 meeting. A distinguished list of Penn State and other international
experts will participate in these two international conferences.
Our goal is to consistently place Penn State among the top tier neuroscience
programs in the nation. While strategic plans are underway to expand the
critical mass of neuroscientists both at the Hershey and University Park
campuses, it is equally important to promote the work and expertise of the
neuroscience community already in place at the Penn State Milton S. Hershey
Medical Center/College of Medicine and Penn State University Park campuses.
Toward this end, the PSHNRI Steering Committee is inviting all faculty with
clinical or research expertise in the area of the neurosciences, in the broadest
sense, to become involved in the neuroscience community. To increase the
visibility and interactions among members of the neuroscience community, we are
asking those with neuroscience expertise to complete the Biographical
Sketch Form on the website. You will have two options, either to complete
our Biographical Sketch, which allows for more comprehensive information
regarding your neuroscience expertise or, as a second option, to click on the
box link to your FRED page and then submit the form. The PSHNRI website
containing your biographical and professional information, will be linked to the
Faculty Research Expertise Database (FRED). Should you have any questions,
please e-mail William Milchak, Education Coordinator at
wpm2@psu.edu.
Thank you for your kind attention.
