Education
B.S., Duke University, 1971
M.D., University of Louisville, 1975
Residency, Yale University, 1975-1979
Fellowship, NIMH/NIH, 1979-1981
Primary Area of Interest

Anxiety, Stress, and Trauma

Primary area of research is the investigation of brain neuroanatomy, neurochemistry, neuroendocrinology and sleep physiology of fear, arousal, startle, and anxiety mechanisms in humans and animals. Current human research focuses on the study and treatment of panic disorder, social anxiety disorder, acute stress syndrome, post-traumatic stress disorder and associated sleep problems (nocturnal-sleep panic attacks, nocturnal seizures, recurrent nightmares, sleep paralysis, sleep misperception, insomnia) in adults and children. The behavioral pharmacology laboratory uses genetic and imaging strategies (MRI, MRS, fMRI) to investigate the effects of stress and sleep deprivation in animal models of human anxiety and mood disorders

Research Focus
Dr. Uhde’s primary area of research is the investigation of the fear, arousal, and anxiety mechanisms in humans and animals.  He has reported a number of novel observations, particularly in relation to neuroendocrine function and sleep physiology, which have stood the test of time and remain the focus of intense study in the field of anxiety disorder research.
