Understanding and controlling patterns of activity in the brain
Research Focus
I focus on understaning the interactions that underlie the formation of macroscopic patterns of activity in the brain. Such patterns include basic rhythmicity of the brain, epileptic seizures, and Parkinsons Disease. I also develop adaptive feedback to control such patterns, which includes the materials and electrochemistry of brain stimulating electrodes, the algorithms to take those electrode measurements and generate control stimulation, and the instrumentation to deliver such stimulation. Associated areas developed around this focus include time series analysis, nonlinear dynamics, the theory and tools to measure synchronization, theory and methods of discrimination analysis, spatiotemporal methods of dynamic image analysis, and advanced control system methods such as Kalman filtering.
