Dr. George Harrell, the founding Dean of the Penn State College
of Medicine, established the Medical Student Research (MSR)
program as an integral part of this medical school's curriculum.
It is a requirement for the M.D. degree. The MSR program gives
each medical student with an opportunity to participate in
mentored medical research. Students gain an understanding of the
research process, limitations and variability of data, and
application of research to clinical practice. The MSR program
provides the Penn State medical student with a distinct
enhancement of his/her application for residency and other post
graduate programs.Logistics
All projects must have a testable, central hypothesis.
Literature reviews, case reports and data collections that do
not include a central testable question are not acceptable as
MSR projects. The selection of an MSR project is the
responsibility of each student. Students are encouraged to
consult their advisors, other faculty members, the MSR website
and the Faculty Research Expertise Database, FRED,
www.fred.hmc.psu.edu. MSR projects are usually initiated in
the first two years but can be conducted later. Projects may be
in the clinical, social, or basic medical sciences and may be
conducted on campus or at approved off campus sites, nationally
or internationally.
