Laparoscopic Partial Nephrectomy

Laparoscopic nephrectomy is an operation to remove a portion of the kidney.  Partial nephrectomy is most often recommended for small and medium-sized masses of the kidney that are suspicious for kidney cancer.  By removing only that part of the kidney containing the mass, the remainder of the kidney can continue to function normally.  Partial nephrectomy can be done by open or laparoscopic surgery.

In laparoscopic partial nephrectomy, the surgeon makes several small (1 cm) incisions in the upper abdomen over the affected kidney.  The surgeon then uses special instruments to carefully separate the lesion and a small portion of normal kidney from the remainder of the kidney.  The kidney defect is repaired using these instruments and the mass is removed through one of the small incisions.

Compared to open surgery, laparoscopic partial nephrectomy shortens hospital stay, minimizes post-operative discomfort, is more cosmetic, and speeds return to normal activity.  The cancer-cure rates of laparoscopic partial kidney surgery equal those of open surgery with considerably less discomfort and disability.
