and one Program (Palliative Care) which are academic homes for 137

As Chair, I am fully
committed to ensuring that education is the main focus of our residency
program, and that we strive to exceed each of our resident’s expectations in
this regard. I am also committed to ensuring continued Residency Review Committee
(RRC) accreditation of
our resident and fellowship programs, including full compliance with both
the spirit and letter of the RRC standards with respect to work and duty
hours, patient load, and the balance between education and service. |
 |
|
The
Department has strong research programs in the autonomic regulation of the
circulatory system, the biology of retroviruses, biologic mechanisms of
cancer development and treatment, pathogenesis of renal failure,
pathogenesis and treatment of hepatitis C infection, pathogenesis and
treatment of obesity and diabetes mellitus, gastrointestinal motility
disorders, and clinical trials in allergic disorders, heart and vascular
disorders, cancer diagnosis and treatment, and other miscellaneous
disorders. This past year residents and fellows presented 21 abstracts
at regional or national meetings, and 4 were recognized as award winners.

|
I expect all graduates of
our programs to be prepared to assume leadership roles in their respective
specialty or subspecialty disciplines as well as in their community, and I
take great personal pride in the accomplishments and success of current
residents and fellows, as well as those of our graduates. |
I look forward to meeting
you during your visit with us.

Message from the Program Director
Future Colleagues,
I would like to take this opportunity to welcome you to the Internal
Medicine Residency Training Program at the Milton S. Hershey Medical Center /Penn State University College of
Medicine.
We are very proud of our tradition at the Penn State/Hershey campus.
Our Program has the reputation of not only training excellent
internists but also continues to be very successful in preparing those
who choose to pursue subspecialty training beyond their
residency.
The Central Pennsylvania area provides a beautiful backdrop to our
academic medical center. You will have the opportunity to
experience the tertiary and quaternary care delivered to patients from
our broad referral base. In addition, the Milton S. Hershey
Medical Center and its supporting practices are considered the source of
primary care for a large population of patients from the surrounding
communities.
As a Program Director, I believe our greatest challenge is in meeting
the educational demands of our ever- evolving health care
delivery systems. Therefore, at Penn State/Hershey, we continue to
evaluate and improve every aspect of the training experience
for our residents.
I hope you will take this opportunity to review the information
contained within our web site. I believe you will find the
educational curriculum, the scholarly activities, the facilities, and
the surrounding area to offer residency training in internal medicine
that is
unique in every aspect.

Please feel free to contact our Program if you have any further
questions.
