Internal Medicine...
is a multidimensional specialty devoted to the comprehensive
and specialized care of adults, with internists (physicians who
practice Internal Medicine) frequently referred to as
"Doctors
for Adults". Internists are committed to the life-long
process of understanding the scientific basis of human health and disease and
the compassionate application of this knowledge to patient care, thus linking
knowledge of the biomedical sciences to clinical medicine.
|
|
As the world's largest medical specialty, Internal Medicine is extremely
broad-based with internists functioning as researchers, practitioners caring for
patients as both generalists and in 13 subspecialty areas in both outpatient and inpatient
settings, providing primary care as well as consultative services, working with
young adults and the very old, and participating extensively in the training of
tomorrow's physicians. The Department of Medicine at Penn State embodies each of these roles through
it's tripartite mission of patient care, research and medical
education.

The
largest collective effort of the faculty and staff is to provide
patient care and oversight for the numerous diagnostic and treatment centers at Penn
State Hershey Medical Center, with these activities accounting for about 25 percent of all patient care services provided
at the Medical Center. The Department of Medicine also leads the
institution in research activities and funding from the National Institutes of
Health (NIH). Medical education efforts include the largest residency
program at the Medical Center in addition to subspecialty fellowship training
and leadership in medical student education in Penn State's College of Medicine.
