Technical Support
for Student Laptop Program
The cost of the
laptop will include a 3-year, on-site support plan
for hardware and software. The support plan will
include support for all hardware originally
purchased through this program, support of
all software that was installed as a component of
the original base image when the laptop was supplied
to the student, plus any additional software
remotely installed by the IT department during the 3
year warranty period. Additional
“student-installed” software will not be supported
under this plan.
Requests for support
should be submitted by a telephone call to the
Technical Support Center (TSC, 531-6281). The
initial call to the TSC will be serviced by a triage
technician to determine if the problem can be
immediately solved by the technician, or if the
solution requires “elevation” to the next level
service technician. Support is limited to the
normal functioning of the laptop, its connectivity
to our network, and the normal operation of the
originally installed software.
In the event that
the installation and/or operation of student-added
software is determined to be the cause of the
original software or hardware functioning
improperly, the student will be instructed to
either unload the offending software or to request
that the laptop receive a new software image.
If a software or
hardware problem cannot be resolved remotely by
either the triage or service technician, a time will
be scheduled for the student to drop off the laptop
for “hands-on” service. The student will also be
reminded to remove any data from the laptop in the
event that the computer requires a new software image.
Room CG625A is the drop-off and pick-up location. The student will be
given a “loaner” laptop until the original laptop is
repaired. The loaner laptop will contain the same
software suite of the originally purchased laptop.
Removal,
uninstalling or disabling the base software suite
will be grounds for possible termination of the
support plan. Many of the installed software tools are
required
either to support
the laptop or to maintain our network security
standards.
The support of the
laptop through this program will cease after 3
years. The student, however, will be able to keep
the laptop beyond the term of the support program. The student my also sell or give the laptop to
another student or HMC/COM employee. In this event,
the original laptop will still be supported for the
same 3 year period. This support service offered by
the IT Department will not transfer to a new owner
of the laptop if the recipient of the used computer
is not either a full-time student or employee of the HMC/COM.
In the event that the new owner of the laptop is not
either a full-time student or employee of the HMC/COM, the
laptop will still retain the Dell manufacturer’s
original 3 year warranty.
