What's In A Name?
The name "LionHeart" acknowledges Penn
State's contribution to the Arrow LionHeartTM design,
especially with regard to the landmark work in the area of
sustained mechanical circulatory support that began in the
early 1970s.
LionHeart starts with the Penn State mascot, the
Nittany Lion. The mascot—as legend has it—came about in
1907 when a PSU alumnus fabricated "the fiercest beast of
all" to overcome rival Princeton's mascot, a tiger, in an
upcoming baseball game. PSU beat Princeton and this
figment of an athlete's imagination to become the
university mascot went on to become more than a figment.
The Nittany Lion symbolizes imagination and strength.
So, the LionHeart, which assists the heart's natural
pumping function, stands out as a creative new device to
strengthen ailing hearts. The word LionHeart™ was
officially trademarked in January 1999 and is owned by
Arrow International, Inc. |
