A retirement reception will be held in honor of Sandy Wood’s 35-plus years of service  on December 13, 2005 from 1:30-3:30 p.m. on the second floor of the Harrell Library.  Please come and join in the festivities and in the good wishes for her future happiness.

Sandy has served on the Board of Directors of the Medical Library Association.  She has won numerous awards and received such honors as being named a Fellow of the MLA and achieving status as a Distinguished Member of the Academy of Health Information Professionals. First published in 1959, AHFS Drug Information, or the "Big Red Book," as it's come to be known, has gone the extra mile for pharmacists and healthcare professionals seeking answers to the most detailed questions. It provides more extensive evidence-based data than any other drug reference.

Thirty Five Years of Service

Virginia L. (Wheeler) Miller

A quick smile and an easy-going manner are the first things that are obvious when you meet Gin Miller.  For over 35 years, she has represented the best in the user friendliness of the Harrell Library staff.  Always approachable and very knowledgeable about the serials collection, she often is the key person to solve a dilemma about a journal for a library user.

Gin started her employment at the library circulation desk when “everyone knew everyone” at the Medical Center – like a large family.  She later worked in the interlibrary loan office; and for the last 20-plus years, has managed the serials collection.  The most significant change that she has seen in that time is the conversion of the journal collection from mostly print holdings to predominantly online access through the Internet.

Gin is married to Lloyd and they have two children, Clifford and Karen.  A long-time resident in the local area, Gin grew up on a Hershey farm that her father managed for the Hershey corporation.  Not ready to retire (she enjoys her work and her library colleagues too much to retire), Gin also keeps busy with church activities, and she loves to shop.  She often can be seen at the malls with her daughter or friend, Bonnie.

Best wishes, Gin, for continued success for many years to come Dean Kirch presented Ginny with a clock and kind words on July 22, 2005.

Enhanced Ovid Web Gateway Interface

The George T. Harrell Library is pleased to announce that Ovid Technologies has made significant enhancements to its search interface. On July 5, 2005, the Enhanced Ovid Web Gateway Interface became available to Hershey campus users. You’ll immediately notice a cleaner, more contemporary look, but be assured that all of the tried-and-true features that you rely on are still available.

Significant new features to the enhanced interface include:

Find Citation – Find a citation when all you have is limited information about a specific article.

Find Citing Articles – Find out where an article may have been cited using Journals@Ovid. (Note, however, that the primary source for cited references remains Web of Knowledge.)

Find Similar – Streamline your research by linking to other relevant articles.

Personal Accounts – The new Personal Accounts (for searches) and Saved Searches/Alerts features allow users to both store saved searches and generate autoalerts via the I.P. connected autologin. The Personal Account creates a private space for each user. Since the I.P. connected autologin has links to full-text, we recommend that users who currently have individual Ovid ID/passwords move their stored searches to the Personal Accounts on the I.P. connected autologin.

Local Holdings Enabled in Library’s Ovid System

The ability to limit search results in Ovid to journals held in the George T. Harrell Library has been restored.  Information has been updated in the Ovid search system so that users searching in MEDLINE and other databases can now select “Limit to Local Holdings” to restrict their search to journals (print and electronic) held by the Harrell Library.

Also available in Ovid is OpenLinks, which provides direct hyperlinks to individual full-text journal articles.  Access to more than a thousand journals via OpenLinks has recently been added.

OpenLink Full Text (HTML)                                 OpenLink  Full Text (PDF)

For access to journals owned by Harrell Library but not connected by OpenLinks, users must consult the Library’s journal holdings list (http://www.hmc.psu.edu/library/ and select the journals icon).

Clinical alerts are provided to expedite the release of findings from the NIH-funded clinical trials where such release could significantly affect morbidity and mortality.

Training session for The Cat

There will be two walk-in classes for those who would like to learn how to use The Cat.  The class will explain how to search for books and materials at all campuses of Penn State, how to view your library record, and how to request books from your desktop.  The classes will be offered on Tuesday, April 9th at Noon and on Wednesday, April 24th at 9 AM in the Harrell Library classroom on the second floor.  No sign-up is needed and classes should last about 30 minutes.  Informal demonstrations of The Cat will be held every Wednesday at 9 AM during the months of April and May at the Reference desk on the first floor of the library.  The librarians are also willing to come to department meetings to demonstrate The Cat.  If you are interested in setting up one of these sessions or have further questions, please call extension 8989. (3/28/02)

» Changes in the Library journal collection starting in January 2002.

See the additions and deletions to the Library journal subscriptions to start in January 2002.  Thirty-two titles will be cancelled and 13 new and/or online versions of titles will be added.  Suggestions for new titles to add to the collection can be made at anytime throughout the year, but the decision process usually begins in early summer and ends by September of each year.  All suggestions for additions and possible deletions are reviewed by the Library Advisory Committee and the Library faculty and are made available for comment by all PSHMC faculty and staff before decisions are final.   In addition, we are continually working to add electronic access to journals.  Over 4000 journal titles are now accessible full text for all Harrell Library users.(02/18/02)

»Almost 4000 journal titles now accessible full text electronically through the Harrell Library!

A joint contract with University Libraries at PSU has just been completed to include electronic access for all Hershey faculty, staff, and students to over 700 journals published by Kluwer Publishers.   This addition brings the total number of journals available electronically to almost 4000!  Other publisher sites include the Academic Press IDEAL service, Cell Press, Wiley Interscience, Lippincott Williams and Wilkins, Mosby, the American Medical Association, and more.  Additional publishers being considered include Blackwell Scientific and Elsevier.  Thousands of journals can also be accessed through ProQuest Direct. Browse the Collections section of our Web site to access specific journal titles. (02/18/02)

POSSIBLE JOURNAL ADDITIONS BEGINNING IN 2002

Each year at this time, the journal collection of the Harrell Library is reviewed to assess what new titles should be added to address new areas of research, patient care, and education.  All suggestions are reviewed by the Library Advisory Committee in August.  Contact your department representative or the library at x8581 to make suggestions or to comment on the potential additions listed to date.  Click here to see the list.

_______________________________________

POSSIBLE JOURNAL DELETIONS FOR 2001/02

As we review the use of the collection, it becomes evident each year that some titles are no longer popular or relevant to the scope of activities conducted at HMC.  Journals that receive little to no use are also reviewed by the Library Advisory Committee to make way for newer more relevant titles.  Feedback from faculty, staff, and students is also very important to the decision to keep or cut.  Click here to see this year's list of low use journals and give us your opinion on what to keep or cut.  Send feedback to vlingle@psu.edu or call x8581.  Thank you.
