To celebrate National Chemistry Week (NCW) 2000, volunteers nationwide will engage thousands of individuals in activities and events to help society better understand the nature and importance of chemistry. This year’s theme, "Kitchen Chemistry", offers many opportunities to explain the connections between chemistry and cooking. Get Cooking With Chemistry, an activity booklet with activities for elementary and middle school students, contains investigations that focus on chemical reactions that occur during cooking. ChemMatters, a magazine for high school students, also features articles about the chemistry of food in its October issue.
Teachers at both the high school and college level are encouraged to celebrate NCW by holding events that focus on this year’s theme. Suggestions include conducting chemical demonstrations and hands-on activities, contests and games, or open houses and public displays. Venues for NCW events could include learning facilities such as schools and universities, libraries and museums, volunteer job sites, parks, and shopping malls. A variety of specialty items to celebrate and commemorate NCW are available through the ACS Online Store.
Our section has plans for a series of chemistry demonstrations and hand’s–on activities to be presented at the Whitaker Center in Harrisburg. College and high school students will help with the activities tentatively scheduled for several Saturday’s in November and possibly some week days during NCW.
