General
internists are frequently referred to as
‘Doctors
for Adults’,
specialists in the comprehensive care of adult patients, ranging from
provision of primary care and preventive services to healthy individuals to
management of patients with multiple, complex chronic diseases.
General internists also serve as the interface with the thirteen
subspecialties of Internal Medicine, engaging this focused expertise in the care
of individuals when needed. General internists also function in the role of
'hospitalists',
or physicians with particular skills needed to optimize the care of hospitalized
patients, and as consultants in the medical management of patients on the wide
range of medical and surgical services at the Penn State Milton S. Hershey
Medical Center. General internists
additionally lead and participate in a wide range of research projects and other
scholarly activities associated with Penn State’s College of Medicine.
