Stem Cell Transplantation

Neuroblastoma

The successful treatment of neuroblastoma requires a multi-disciplinary approach involving chemotherapy, surgery, radiation and stem cell transplantation.  In general, patients undergo stem cell collection after three cycles of chemotherapy, and the stem cells are frozen for later use.

After further chemotherapy, surgery is performed to remove any tumor that remains.  High dose chemotherapy with carboplatinum, melphalan, and etoposide is given followed by an infusion of the patient's own stem cells.  Radiation therapy is generally given within 30-60 days following the stem cell transplant.  Patients then receive retinoic acid therapy.
