Penn State Children’s Oncology cares for infants, children,
adolescents and young adults with a variety of cancers. Our Oncologists
work closely with a variety of sub-specialists within Penn State
Children's Hospital to provide the medical and surgical services needed
to meet the unique needs of the child with cancer.
We understand that patient needs are not only medical in nature; therefore we
provide care in a team approach. Each patient care team consists of the patient,
their family, a physician, nurse specialist and a social worker. Additionally,
child life specialists, music therapists, psychological and educational
specialists’ services are readily available. This provides a multidisciplinary
approach to the special needs of our patients and their families, with the
patient and family being an integral part of their healthcare team.
We belong to the
Children’s
Oncology Group, a national alliance of clinical and research pediatric
oncology specialists. Members of our team are actively involved in the
development and implementation of clinical trials used nationally for the care
and treatment of children with cancer.
A local resource that also enhances the quality of our care is The
Four Diamonds Fund.
Charles and Irma Millard established the Fund in 1972 at Children’s Hospital a
part of Penn State Hershey Medical Center. Its mission is to enhance the care of
children with cancer through financial support to patients and their families as
well as program development.
Outpatient care is provided at the University Physician Center on Penn State
Hershey Medical Center campus. Specially trained nurses and pharmacists provide
care in this full service facility. Much of the necessary care for children with
cancer can be provided in this outpatient setting or at home. However, when
inpatient care is necessary it is only steps away on Marathon Street of Penn
State Children's Hospital that is located on the 7th floor of Penn State Hershey
Medical Center.
