Cardiac & Thoracic Surgery Program

The cardiothoracic team collaborates with other Penn State Heart & Vascular physicians and nurses to offer a full spectrum of operative care to adult patients with cardiac disease.

  • Coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery
    • On pump
    • Off pump
    • Arterial Conduits
    • Endoscopic harvesting of saphenous veins & radial artery conduits
    • Laser revascularization (TMLR)
    • Epithelial growth factor injection (FDA trial)
  • Heart valve repairs and replacements (mitral, aortic, tricuspid valves)
  • Arrhythmia surgery
  • Surgical therapy for heart failure
    • High Risk Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting (CABG)
    • Left ventricular aneurysm repair and remodeling operations (DOR, Jatene, VRS)
    • Ventricular assist devices (VAD) - AbiomedThoratec Heartmate ventricular assist devices for bridge-to-transplant and myocardial recovery
    • Destination therapy with mechanical support - Heartmate XVE Ventricular Assist Device (Medicare approved implant center for end-stage heart failure in non transplant candidates)
    • Cardiac restraint devices - ACORN CorCap (trademark), ParaCor (minimally invasive cardiac restraint device - FDA trial
