Risk Factors of Heart Disease

There are several factors that directly or indirectly affect your chances of developing Coronary Heart Disease (CHD).  Knowing what they are and which are prevalent in your life gives you the power to begin today to fight off the number one killer of men and women in America.  Some of these you can't change or control, such as your age and family history.  Others, such as your blood pressure, diet and cigarette smoking can be managed by you.  It's important for you to know them all, how they affect you, and what you can do about them.

There are various ways in which different institutions categorize the risk factors for CHD.  Sometimes they're listed as Primary and Secondary.  We've broken them down into those you can control, and those you can't.

Uncontrollable Factors

  • Family History
  • Gender and Age
  • Diabetes
  • Race

Controllable Factors

  • Smoking
  • Cholesterol
  • High Blood Pressure
  • Obesity
  • Physical Inactivity

Your Fight Against Coronary Heart Disease

Know the Enemy
Before you can fight against any enemy you need to know who he is, and why he's the enemy.  If you've read about the various risk factors on this page you've taken a good step.  Next, read about what cholesterol is and can do to your arteries.

Know Thyself
Next you need to know where you stand in relation to CHD, both at your current stage in life and your future chances of  acquiring CHD, and your potential to fight against it.  A good tool is the Heart Test.  When you take the Heart Test your answers are sent to the Heart Team at the Cardiovascular Center, where your answers are analyzed and your risks calculated.  Your results will be mailed to you.  There is no charge for this service, and you will have in your hands an evaluation and recommendations concerning your personal risk.  Plus, you'll receive a coupon for a free lipid panel at Penn State Hershey Medical Center.
