Sclerosing Cholangitis
What is it?
Sclerosing cholangitis is an inflammation or hardening of the biliary
ducts.
Who gets it?
The disease is more common in men than in women, and affects individuals
aged 30 through 50. Individuals with inflammatory bowel disease are at
increased risk.
What are the symptoms?
The symptoms may include fatigue, itching and jaundice.
Diagnosis
Diagnosis is made by Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography or
(ERCP).
A cholangiography (injection of dye into the bile ducts), may also be
used to diagnosis this disease. Liver biopsy may also aid in the
diagnosis.
Treatment
Treatment is aimed at controlling the symptoms of the disease. Itching
is controlled with various medications; antibiotics are used to treat
any infections of the bile ducts. Surgical or Endoscopic procedures may
be used to open any blockages of the bile ducts to enhance bile flow.
Liver Transplantation may be necessary for progressive disease that
leads to cirrhosis of the liver.
