WHO WE ARE

The Family Practice Interest Group (FPIG) of the Penn State University College of Medicine was established as a student organization founded on the principles of family medicine while, at the same time, promoting the art and the science of medicine and the advancement of public health.

Our award winning organization takes great pride in being actively involved with one of the first departments of Family Medicine in an academic health center in the United States. In addition, our department is home to the Pennsylvania Area Health Education Center (AHEC) Program. Being involved provides excellent opportunities to develop relationships with physicians, faculty, and staff.

FPIG, although an organization geared towards family medicine, has something to offer students interested in all specialties. Our activities prove to be not only educational, but also enable us to serve the community at large.

Organized activities include our regularly scheduled Residency dinners, Differential Diagnoses luncheons, and Tar Wars events, as well as the annual Dash for Diabetes, Primary Care Day, and the Advanced Directives Program.

YOUR CHANCE TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE AS A FUTURE DOCTOR!

An important message to help the AAFP increase federal health budget spending:

Your academy, the AAFP, is trying to  gather support to pressure congress  into protecting funding for the health professions. Please take the time and contact your local representative. It is easy to do, follow the link below. Simply change the wording of the email, that it will automatically send to your representative, to reflect that you are a medical student and not a physician. Sign as a student (i.e. do not use the title Dr/MD, aka Mr. Karl T Clebak, MSII) and click send. It takes 2 seconds, and you have the opportunity to affect health care for the entire nation!

1. By March 12, please contact your Senators and Representative by phone using the Capitol Switchboard at (202) 224-3121 or by e-mail using AAFP's Speak Out program:    Speak Out

2. Tell them to insist that the Budget Resolution includes an increase of $4 billion for Function 550 above fiscal year 2007.

WHAT WE DO

As a club, we sponsor several community service projects which include our annual Dash For Diabetes, Tar Wars, and the Advanced Directives program we are currently initiating (for information about these programs, please follow the corresponding links...Advanced Directives will have a link when it is up and running).

We also sponsor a variety of networking and educational programs throughout the year.  These programs include our monthly Residency Dinners and Differential Diagnosis Lunch Lectures as well as our annual Primary Care Day.  For more information about Primary Care Day please follow the corresponding link (to be added by the end of Nov.).

Residency Dinners

The Residency Dinners grant our students the opportunity to talk with physicians and residents for various Pennsylvania Family Medicine Residency Programs over a relaxing dinner at one of the many local restaurants.  Additionally, the residency program has a short presentation for the students, usually in the form of a lecture or game, on topics related to family medicine.  Topics that have been presented in the past include Medical Jeopardy, Immunizations, Bio-Terrorism, Opportunities in Family Medicine, and others.  Finally, these dinners serve to provide the students with insight into residency in general as well as the specifics of the presenting program.

Differential Diagnosis

The Differential Diagnoses are a series of lunch lectures sponsored and presented by our affiliated Family Medicine Residency Program, the Good Samaritan Residency Program of Lebanon, PA.  Residents from the program come to campus and provide a 45 min interactive case presentation related to recent coursework of either the first or second year class.  These lectures almost always prove to be a good review of upcoming exam material.
