Research  Facilities

Research at The Penn State College of Medicine is supported by an outstanding suite of research facilities including:

General Clinical Research Center

Core Research facilities

Animal Facilities

General Clinical Research Center

The GCRC is a 6,800 square feet unit that includes five patient exam rooms, three infusion/sleep rooms, an exercise room, and a micro dialysis core lab.  This facility, which has been recently renovated, has been funded by the NIH since 1995.  It provides an ideal infrastructure for investigators who conduct research with human subjects.

Shared resources available to investigators at the College of Medicine include:
The Tumor Bank

Provides access to banked tumor and normal tissue specimens

The Reagent Stock Program

Discounted products from seven vendors of cell biology, cell culture, and molecular biology reagents and supplies are available on site

Additional shared resources, including a monoclonal hybridoma facility are available through the Penn State Huck Institutes for Life Sciences Shared Technology Facilities at the University Park campus.

Animal Resource Facility

The Animal Resource Facility, which includes the Central Animal Quarters in the Medical Sciences Building, an Animal Research Farm, and a large dairy barn with acreage for pastures and corrals, has been designated by national agencies as a model research facility with respect to both design and operation.

The Animal Research Farm has designated space for quarantine, holding, and breeding of a wide variety of species ranging from small laboratory animals through nonhuman primates. The facility is ideal for long-term observation of animals under chronic experimentation by providing better genetic control and conditioning. Interconnected units include administration, research, training, quarantine/holding (for small and large animals, primates, dogs), service core facilities, and experimental surgery. A new 8,159 sq. ft. addition for housing transgenic animals at the Animal Research Farm was opened in the fall of 2002. The new wing is designed to operate as a barrier utilizing structural factors and procedures to prevent the introduction of infectious diseases into the animals housed there.

The Central Animal Quarters of the Animal Resource Facility, located on the ground floor of the Basic Sciences Wing, is designed for teaching and experimentation. This unit includes surgical suites and holding areas for smaller species. It also has specially designed facilities for infectious diseases (BSL3), radioisotopes, diagnostic and experimental radiology, diagnostic laboratories (histopathology, clinical chemistry, and microbiology), and small animal colonies. These facilities permit intensive study at the cellular and subcellular levels of basic biologic phenomena on a variety of domestic and exotic laboratory animals. The Animal Research Farm is connected to the Central Animal Quarters by a 1400-foot tunnel. This tunnel permits movement of animals between the two units under controlled environmental conditions.
