The Diabetes Program within Penn State Endocrinology
& Diabetes continues to provide a multidisciplinary approach to the treatment of patients with diabetes.
The combined efforts of a dedicated staff of
physicians (Rena Cunard
DeArment, M.D., Chris
Fan, M.D., Robert
A. Gabbay, M.D., Ph.D., Mary
A. Lathrop, M.D., David Macaluso,
M.D.), nurse practitioner (Susan
Jones), diabetes educators (Glenda Hunter and
Mary Collins), dietitian (Theresa Gustafson), and our physician
assistant (Michelle
Kavin) are focused on improving glycemic control and preventing complications of diabetes.
We continue to offer an array of diabetes
education classes and a support group for patients with diabetes.
Community outreach has involved participation in health fairs in Central
Pennsylvania and organizing several community activities centered around
Diabetes Month in November. Our active and
successful insulin pump therapy program continues to thrive. A major
quality improvement project has focused on inpatient diabetes
management. We also use a state-of-the-art computerized diabetes
registry system to track patient outcomes in collaboration with Penn
State Diabetes Center.
Research efforts have been focused on clinical trials
evaluating optimal medical management for patients with diabetes
including oral agents, forms of insulin initiation, and insulin
infusions.
