Clinician Update: Current Care of the Bariatric Surgery Patient

This conference will provide an update on current surgical weight loss topics, including but not limited to: candidates for bariatric surgery, surgical procedures, weight loss in special populations, exercise and obesity, body contouring, and non-surgical options for weight loss. Common follow-up issues will be discussed, as well as nutritional and psychological concerns.

This symposium will focus on the information important for primary care physicians and other members of the health-care team to help manage diabetes and its complications. Presentations will be geared toward a practical approach to the problem.

knowledge through review of journal articles by those
present and through other similar activities.
The journal club is open to all who are interested and
the meeting is very informal.

Physiological Response to
Stress Diabetes Review and Progress PSIO522 (HY) PHSIO510 (UP)
- This course is
designed for upper level graduate students and welcomes
postdoctoral fellows, clinical fellows and residents
interested in developing a research career. This course will study diabetes as a physiological
stress and examine the response of the body to this disease. The course will examine the most recent literature
regarding the cause and treatment of type I and type II
diabetes and their associated complications. By the end of the course, students should have the
necessary framework to identify understudied areas of
research in diabetes and develop a research plan to address
this need.

Clinical Management of Obesity - College of Medicine

This 4-week course provides Penn State College of Medicine students exposure to the multifaceted area of obesity management, including diabetes, bariatric surgery, medical management and pediatrics.
PREREQUISITE: Successful completion of any third year course which includes direct patient care; permission of instructor required (email Dr. Boan or Dr. Ku); or successful completion of second year medical school at Penn State University College of Medicine
