Why Give?
We are World Class.
Since 1967, Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center and Penn State
College of Medicine have grown to meet the needs of the people in the
communities we serve. We have almost 6000 individuals on staff including over
500 faculty, 300 residents, 400 medical students, and 200 graduate students all
working together to defeat the world’s most difficult health problems.
We’re bringing research advancements to life. Penn State Hershey
researchers are working to develop vaccines to fight breast cancer and prostate
cancer, offering liquid air to help patients with lung disease breathe easier,
and creating antibiotics strong enough to disarm even the most resistant
bacteria.
Some of our research breakthroughs include:
- discovering the gene that suppresses the spread of skin cancer
- bringing the first antiviral drug for hepatitis C to the marketplace
- discovering the first topical agent to kill Papillomavirus (Herpes)
- helped to develop the first technology to test blood sugar through the
skin instead of by a blood test
- discovering the gene that blocks breast cancer metastasis
We are on the forefront of medical advancements for children. Our
specialists were first on the east coast to implant the world’s smallest
pacemaker and the only one’s in the region who perform minimally invasive
surgery on newborns-advancements that cure thousands of children each year.
We are shaping the way pediatric care is delivered. Our award winning
researchers are developing genetic approaches to help premature babies with
underdeveloped lungs. We’re studying different treatments that will prevent
tissue damage in children with brain injuries.
We are teaching the next generation. We’ve trained hundreds of
pediatric specialists to be top-notch in their fields. We’re invited to present
the latest techniques and treatments to physicians around the globe.
We are Penn state cancer specialists. We are skilled with the power to
cure. Our breast cancer center brings tighter physicians, surgeons, radiation
oncologists, and nurses under one roof, giving patients immediate access to
their diagnostic test results.
We are Penn State educators. We are training a new generation of
physicians in compassionate, skilled cancer care. We make every effort to provide
answers for cancer patients. First in the state to offer breast cancer support
group, we offer programs and services that give women the information they need
to overcome the challenges of breast cancer.
We are Penn State cancer researchers. We are working every day to move
one step closer in the race for the cure. Our Gittlen Cancer research team
discovered the gene that blocks breast cancer metastasis. It’s breakthroughs
like this that will make breast cancer a thing of the past.
We created the foundation upon which the next generation of medicine can
be built. One of the keys to achieving our mission of world class care is to
foster continued excellence in operational and financial performance. We provide
an environment where everyone is respected where honesty and integrity is
promoted, where teamwork and collaboration is our approach and where we pursue
excellence in all we do.
Our mission and values attract many people. An example of one is
community member Larry Silver, M.D., who on behalf of his father, I.O. Silver,
M.D., gave us the resources to open the I.O. Silver Cardiovascular Specialties
Clinic. This clinic combines outpatient services for cardiology and
cardiothoracic surgery into one convenient setting for patients.
You can become a part of world-class care.
