Dermatology Strategic Plans and Tactics

Education – Our goal is to recruit and retain the best faculty, residents, and graduate students.

·      We will expand our faculty by recruiting a Mohs surgeon, a cosmetic dermatologist, and a basic scientist.

·      The Schragger and Hassel Endowments were established to support our educational missions.

·      Leadership training was started to enhance our residents’ future practice in any setting.

·      A dermatopathology fellowship will start on July 1, 2008.

·      Clinician-educator and dermatologic surgery fellowships are planned for the future.

·      A clinician-educator endowment will be initiated.

Research – Our goal is to be in the top 25% National Institutes of Health (NIH) funded departments in the nation.

·      A physician scientist will be recruited to enhance our NIH funded basic science research.

·      We continue to build our Dermatology Research Endowment with:  J & T Accessory Sales, our annual Food and Wine Event, and individual donations.

·      The Professor of Dermatology Endowment helps support basic research in Dr. Thiboutot’s laboratory.

·      Innovative translational clinical investigations continue with over a dozen funded investigations annually.

Patient Care – Our goal is to increase the care we give to our patients.

·      The expansion of clinic space will allow us to treat more patients.

·      We have recruited another general medical dermatologist to have more appointments available at our Nye’s  Road and University Physicians Center clinics.

·      Open Access and evening clinics expand access for our patients.

·      Our care of skin cancer will increase with the future addition of a third Mohs surgeon.

·      The dermatopathology joint venture between the Departments of Pathology and Dermatology enhances skin pathology services.

·      We will explore opportunities to provide dermatologic care in State College in the future.

Community Service – Our goal is to enhance our involvement with our neighbors.

·      We continue to serve at the Bethesda Missions, Annual Skin Cancer screening, Alopecia Areata and Psoriasis Support Groups, and Camp Horizon.

·      Our Community Advisory Board increases our communication and alignment with our citizens.
