Introduction-
The Histology Laboratory is a campus-wide core facility that supports the research of investigators and their trainees. The lab provides various histological instruments and technical support for researchers who need to do cellular work in their research. The facility furnishes techniques, full scales of histological equipment, chemicals and dyes to investigators/laboratory personnel for research.
Services-
- Cryostat sectioning
- Tissue processing and paraffin embedding
- Paraffin sectioning
- Routine hematoxylin and eosin staining
-
Special staining (glycogen, neuron, connective tissue
staining, etc.)
- Immunohistochemistry
- In situ hybridization
Equipment-
- 2 Leica cryocut 1800 cryostats
- Histomatic tissue processor model 166 MP
- Tissue embedding system
- Paraffin microtome
-
Sliding microtome (for thick brain sections
up to 200 mm)
- Staining facility for hematoxylin and eosin staining
Policies and Procedures-
Processing of tissue, paraffin embedding and sectioning is provided by histology staff only. Cryostat sectioning and routine hematoxylin and eosin staining are provided by histology staff or may be conducted by individual investigators/laboratory personnel at a minor cost. Training is available for individual investigators/laboratory personnel who want to perform special histological staining.
User Fees -
The Histology lab is set up on a fee for service basis, with standard fees recalculated annually to cover incurred costs only. The following is a list of approximate charges. Costs may vary depending on the number of samples submitted at one time and the type of samples. A higher number of samples submitted results in a lower cost per piece of sample. The charge is based on labor used, therefore each investigator need to provide slides, slide boxes and other necessary materials for his/her research.
- Processing tissue and paraffin embedding---$ 3.00 per block
- Cryostat sectioning --------------------------- $ 1.00 per slide
- Paraffin sectioning --------------------------- $ 1.00 per slide
- Staining (H & E, PAS, Nissl body etc.) ------ $ 1.00 per slide
- Decalcification -------------------------- $ 1.00 per specimen
- Sliding microtome ---------------------- $20.00 per hour
