The Electron Microscopy Laboratory is a campus-wide core facility which supports the research of investigators and their trainees.  It provides all levels of technical support and consultation for researchers needing routine transmission electron microscopy.  The facility furnishes techniques and instrumentation to investigators/laboratory personnel for research and training.

                           Transmission electron microscopy

                          - Biological specimen fixation, dehydration, and embedding

                                      (in epoxy resin )

                          - Ultra thin sectioning and staining

                          - 1 micron epoxy resin sections for light microscopic

                                      correlation with electron microscopy

                           - Negative staining

                          - Coating grids with formvar

                            Philips TEM 400

                   3 Sorvall Mt-2B ultramicrotomes

                   Durst enlarger

Processing of tissue is provided by EM staff or may be conducted by

individual investigators / laboratory personnel ( either alone or with

assistance from EM staff ). An EM staff person is available to operate

the electron microscope and record images.  Training is also available

on the electron microscope for those investigators who prefer to do

their own scoping.  The training includes loading samples and

instruction on focussing and image recording.  Training is provided at

       no cost.

The EM lab is set up on a fee for service basis.  The following is a list

of approximate charges.  Costs may vary depending on the number of

samples submitted at one time, the type of samples, and the

specimen preparation  techniques required. A higher number of pieces

of tissue submitted results in a lower cost per piece of tissue.

           1. Processing tissue ( 0 - 8 vials / petri dishes /

                                 centrifuge tubes / etc.) ---------------------$132.00

           2. Trimming and semithin sectioning -------$20.00 / piece of tissue

           3. Thin sectioning -----------------------------$26.50 / piece of tissue

           4. Staining grids (sections ) -----------------$8.50 / piece of tissue

           5. Negative staining ( formvar grids

provided by investigator )------------------$4.50 / grid

           6. Negative staining ( formvar grids not

                                provided by investigator ) -----------------$8.50 / grid

           7. Electron  microscope time-----------------$70.00 / hr

           8. Darkroom work -----------------------------$26.50 / 10 prints

           9. Consumables ( chemicals, grids, film, photographic paper, glass

knives, glass slides, etc. ) ------$14.50 / piece of tissue

The lab is located in rooms C3707 and C3709.
