There are currently eight Core Facilities at the College of Medicine, organized as the Section of Research Resources, and located in rooms C1727-C1735, C3603, C3706, C3707-C3709, C7643, and at the Animal Research Farm and MRI Building . The Core Facilities are not affiliated with specific departments, but have diverse advisory committees which helps staff members develop policy and strategic direction. Core Facilities are accessible to all investigators at the College of Medicine and other PSU campuses at subsidized fee levels, as well as to researchers outside the PSU system at fee levels covering actual costs only. Active Member of ABRF (Association of Biomolecular Resource Facilities). |
History: The Cell Science/Flow Cytometry Core and the Macromolecular Core have been in operation since 1982 and 1988, respectively. The Transgenic Core was started in 1994. The Molecular Genetics Core was established in 1995. The Tumor Bank was established in 1998, and the MALDI-TOF Core and Molecular Modeling Cores were established in 1999. The Functional Genomics Core was started in 2001, and Confocal and Deconvolution Microscopy instrumentation was combined with existing EM instrumentation to form the Microscopy Imaging Core in 2003. In 2004, the existing MRI/MRS facility within the Department of Radiology became a shared institutional core facility within the Section of Research Resources. In addition, a Reagent Stock Program of molecular biology and cell culture reagents is administered within the Core Facilities. |
The goals in establishing the Core Facilities were four-fold:

| The Core facilities are heavily used by faculty, students and staff. At last count, approximately 65 million dollars of sponsored research was supported in part by Section activities, and hundreds of faculty, students and staff have used these labs. Thus, the Core facilities have become an important part of the research infrastructure at the College of Medicine. | |
