Instructions for Heart Surgery

Report To:
Children's Heart Group at Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center
University Physician Center II
UPC Suite 200
500 University Drive, Hershey, PA 17033

We understand this is a stressful experience for you and your child. Our goal is to make you and your child as comfortable and as informed as possible. The information below will help us meet our goal.

Your child must not eat or drink before surgery. If your child has anything to eat or drink; the surgery may be delayed or rescheduled. You may park in the parking lot located behind the Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center.  Parking is free.

It is very important that a family member be available during and after the surgery. Family members may wait in the 7th floor Family Waiting Room. If you wish to leave the hospital, a receptionist at the waiting room desk will provide you with a pager. A nurse will inform you of your child's progress and condition throughout surgery. The doctor will speak with you after surgery. A cardiology nurse will call you a few days before the surgery. The nurse will give you an arrival time, eating and drinking instructions; medication instructions and answer any questions you may have about the surgery.

Please call our office if you have any questions about the instructions.
