Millersville University Students Gear Up For Dance Marathon
Student-Run Philanthropy To Benefit the Penn State Children's Hospital

Millersville PA- Students at Millersville University get the chance to reach out with a healing hand on March 8th, 2002 at Brooks Gymnasium.

That is when the student body will kick off the fourth annual Dance Marathon. This 24-hour student run event benefits Children’s Miracle Network at Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center.

"Dance Marathon should be recognized as a community event," says Karyn LaSota, Overall Committee Chair. "Every year the Millersville Dance Marathon grows stronger and stronger. We anticipate a great turn out this year."

The dancers, who signed up to participate in the marathon, do have certain rules to follow including:

  • remaining at the dance location for the entire 24 hours

  • remaining on their feet for the entire 24 hours except for meals and breaks

  • consuming no caffeine during the dance marathon

  • having fun

  • and always remembering that they’re doing this FOR THE KIDS!!

The revenues collected for the dance marathon come from sponsors, pledges, and donations. Some of the sponsorship and donations are used to supply materials for the actual event but monetary donations will be given to CMN at Hershey Medical Center.

PSECU and Party Time DJ’s are our major sponsors for the dance marathon this year. PSECU has provided each of the dancers with a t-shirt while Party Time DJ’s will be playing tunes to move to all night.

Dance Marathon draws from examples at Penn State and Indiana Universities. The Penn State Dance Marathon began in 1973 and regularly raises over one million dollars for the Four Diamonds at Hershey Medical Center. The funds Indiana raises benefit the Ryan White Infectious Disease Fund at Riley Hospital for Children in Indianapolis. They have raised over $100,000 each year since 1994. Both hospitals are also part of the Children’s Miracle Network.

CMN’s distinguishing characteristics is 100% of the funds raised locally stay local. That means every cent Dance Marathon at Millersville University raises this year and every year will benefit the kids at Penn State Hershey Medical Center.
