Preparing Your Child For Surgery

Welcome to the Penn State Children's Hospital

1st Stop: The Admission Desk

A few forms to sign...

And your hospital bracelet

After you checkinto one of your outpatient surgery areas, you'll change into hospital pajamas or a hospital gown.

Sometimes our patients find that a toy, a hand held video game or a portable cd player helps to pass the time.

Your doctor and an anesthesiologist may visit you while you wait to go to the operating room.

This is a good time to ask any questions you may have.

Time to take off any jewelry

...and head to the bathroom.

Your nurse may give you some "pre-medication" to drink.

This will help you relax.

Your family can walk with you to the doors of the operating area.

They will stay in a special waiting room while you are having surgery.

The operating room staff will have a few things to do before your surgery begins.

The mask will help you to fall asleep very quickly.

The next step is the recovery room.

You'll still be feeling tired. The good news is that your family can be with you while you rest.
