Shared Facilities Research
Animal Research
Services: Transgenic Services
Scientific Director: Sarah Bronson, PhD
The purpose of the Transgenic Core Lab is to centralize
development of transgenic and targeted gene disruption mouse
models for use in biomedical research, since experience with
similar facilities at other institutions indicated that the
efficiency and success rates of transgenic experiments are
greatly improved in a core facility where the procedures are
conducted routinely. This centralization of the basic
microinjection and stem cell technologies in a common core lab
also avoids unnecessary and expensive duplication of efforts.
To allow this centralization, an 8 x159 sq. ft addition to the
Animal Research Farm, funded in part by a C06 grant, was built
to house transgenic animals.
The new wing was designed to operate as a barrier utilizing
structural factors and procedures to prevent the introduction of
infectious diseases into the animals housed there.
Investigators have access to the Transgenic Animal Facility on a
fee-for-service basis. Several investigators at the College of
Medicine are currently funded for work involving transgenic
animals. The College of Medicine provides funds for the
purchase of equipment for microinjections, and for technical
support.
