Research Areas
The Institute focuses teaching and student
research on the area of medical devices, in the
following areas:
Since 1990, sponsored funding at Penn State/Hershey has doubled, to $52 million projected
for the current year. Approximately 70% of this sponsored support is obtained
competitively from the National Institutes of Health. In addition to sponsored funding,
the Medical Center contributes approximately $5 million per year to support pilot and
feasibility projects and research resources and facilities. The history of collaborative
research involving Bioengineers in the College of Engineering and faculty, students and
research staff in the College of Medicine goes back to the start of the artificial heart
program, shortly after the construction of the Medical Center campus (1970). Over the past
twenty-four years there have been numerous collaborative research efforts between
Bioengineering at University Park and the College of Medicine at Hershey. Engineers
working and studying at the Medical Center have found it to provide a unique environment,
which enables them to gain an understanding of clinical practice and the role of
biomedical devices and technology that they could not have gained in a pure engineering
environment. |
