Biochemistry & Molecular Biology Graduate Program

PhD Program Admission Requirements

Scores from the Graduate Record Examination (GRE), or from a comparable substitute examination accepted by a graduate program and authorized by the Dean of the Graduate School, are required for admission. Applicants are expected to have taken courses in biology, general, organic, and physical chemistry, mathematics, and general physics. Biochemistry is desirable but not essential. Candidates should have a 3.0 (B) grade point average or better.

A complete application includes (only complete applications are considered):

  • Pre-application form (online) including personal statement of purpose. (See pre-application procedures).
  • Brief personal statement summarizing the background and professional goals of the applicant. (It is not necessary to mail a printed version of the personal statement. It is part of the online pre-application form)
  • Transcripts from undergraduate universities.
  • GRE general test scores (or scores from a comparable examination accepted by the graduate program, e.g., MCAT exam). Subject GRE scores are not required.  School Code: 2660; Dept. Code: 0202
  • TOEFL score (if applicable). Foreign applicants whose native language is not English must provide evidence of proficiency in English with a minimum score of 550 on the TOEFL examination.  The best-qualified applicants will be accepted on a space-available basis. School Code: 2660
  • Three letters of recommendation (on recommender's letterhead - no form is provided)
